About Karađoz-beg Mosque

Mostar's grandest Ottoman mosque, completed in 1557 and attributed to the school of the architect Sinan, a domed cube with a tall decorated minaret at the head of the old town.

The Karađoz-beg Mosque, completed in 965 AH (1557/58) in the Ottoman period, is the largest and finest of Mostar's historic mosques, standing on the left bank north-west of the Old Bridge. It was endowed by a wealthy local benefactor, Mehmed-beg Karađoz, and is attributed to the school of the great imperial architect Mimar Sinan. A domed cube fronted by a columned double porch, with a main dome about eleven metres across, it is one of only three domed mosques in the city.

Its stone minaret rises about thirty-four metres, with a richly carved balcony. Inside, restorers uncovered a rare sequence of painted layers, from 16th-century arabesques to later Ottoman decoration. The mosque was the centre of a great charitable endowment that once included a school, a soup kitchen, bridges, inns and dozens of bazaar shops. Badly damaged in the Second World War and again in the 1990s war, it was restored between 2002 and 2004 within the programme that rebuilt the Old Bridge and the old town, and reopened in July 2004.
