About Kriva Ćuprija (the Crooked Bridge)

A small single-arch Ottoman bridge over the Radobolja stream, the oldest in Mostar, often called a miniature of the Old Bridge and said to be its trial run.

Kriva Ćuprija, the Crooked Bridge, is a small single-arch stone bridge over the Radobolja stream a short way west of the Old Bridge, and is often described as its miniature. The oldest single-arch stone bridge in Mostar, it is dated to about 1558, in the Ottoman period; the builder is variously given as the architect Ćejvan-ćehaja or left unknown. Its semicircular arch spans about eight and a half metres, reached by stepped stone ramps, and it belongs to the UNESCO-listed old town and is a national monument.

A local tradition holds that the Crooked Bridge was built as a trial run before the great Old Bridge, a rehearsal in miniature; it is a charming story, told only as 'it is said'. The little bridge sits among the old stone houses of the Donja Mahala quarter, with café terraces built out over the Radobolja, a spring-fed stream that once drove watermills and served the town's tanneries before it joins the Neretva. Floods destroyed the bridge in 2000 and it was rebuilt soon afterwards.

Did you know? The Crooked Bridge is reckoned the oldest single-arch stone bridge in Mostar, dated to about 1558, a few years older than the great Old Bridge it resembles in miniature.
