About Blagaj Tekke
A white Dervish monastery set against a towering cliff at the source of the Buna river, about ten kilometres from Mostar, where an emerald spring gushes from a great cave.
The Blagaj Tekke is a Sufi dervish lodge built tight against a sheer cliff at the source of the Buna river, at Blagaj about ten kilometres south-east of Mostar. One of the most striking sights in Herzegovina, it stands where the Buna bursts in a flood of cold, clear water from a great cave at the foot of the rock. The complex, a guest house and a tomb, is traditionally dated to around 1520 or earlier in the Ottoman period, though the present building largely dates from an 1851 restoration.
The tekke has been damaged by rockfalls from the cliff above and rebuilt more than once, and was run over the centuries by different Sufi orders. Dervish activity was banned after the Second World War, and the site returned to the Islamic Community in 1974. Inside are a small tomb holding two graves whose occupants are uncertain, a little bath and a richly carved room. The Buna spring is one of the strongest karst springs in Europe, and the ensemble is a national monument on the UNESCO tentative list.
