About Zell and the Black Cat
Zell, a wine town on a horseshoe bend of the Mosel, famous for the legend of the Black Cat, the Zeller Schwarze Katz, which gave its name to the local wine.
Zell received town rights in 1222 and later belonged to the archbishops of Trier, whose castle house still stands on the river front. By legend, a black cat once chose the best barrel in a Zell cellar, and the name passed to the wine. A fountain with the cat stands in the market square.
The town is free to walk. A short vineyard trail marked with cat paws climbs above the town past old towers. Wine taverns may have a rest day after the harvest, and the river boats run mainly until the end of October.
Did you know? By legend, a black cat in a Zell cellar jumped onto one barrel and defended it, so merchants from Aachen bought that wine, the first Black Cat wine.
