About Bernkastel Market Square
The market square of Bernkastel, on the right bank of the Mosel at Bernkastel-Kues, lined with tall half-timbered houses of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries around a fountain of 1606.
Bernkastel received town rights in 1291, and its market square keeps its medieval layout. Around it stand gabled half-timbered houses, the Renaissance town hall of 1608 and the fountain of Saint Michael of 1606. Nearby, the narrow Spitzhäuschen, dated 1416, leans out over its little street.
The square is open at all times and free. Shops, cafés and wine bars keep their own hours, and many shorten them after the summer season. The Graach Gate, the last town gate, holds a small local museum.
Did you know? Bernkastel and Kues, on opposite banks of the Mosel, were separate towns until 1905, when they were joined to form the town of Bernkastel-Kues.
