About Calmont and the Bremm Loop

The Calmont, a slate hill above the village of Bremm with one of the steepest vineyards in Europe and a via ferrata across its slope, and the great loop of the Mosel below it.

The vineyard slopes at up to about 65 degrees, and every grape is picked by hand and carried up in baskets. A via ferrata of about 3 km, with ladders and steel cables, runs along the slope between Bremm and Ediger-Eller. On the summit ridge lie the foundations of a Gallo-Roman temple.

The paths are free and open all year, but walk them only in dry weather: wet slate is very slippery. The via ferrata needs sure feet and a head for heights. In autumn the pickers work on the slopes.
