About Cochem
Cochem, a small town on the Mosel below its castle on the hill, with a riverfront promenade, a market square of half-timbered houses, old town gates and wine taverns.
Cochem is first recorded in 866 and received town rights in 1332. It belonged for five centuries to the archbishops of Trier. French troops burned it in 1689, and bombs destroyed much of the old town in the Second World War, so many old fronts were rebuilt. A chairlift climbs to the Pinnerkreuz viewpoint.
The town is free to walk all year. River boats run mainly until the end of October or early November, and the chairlift and many taverns have shorter hours in late autumn. In summer and early autumn the town is busy with cruise ships.
Did you know? Cochem on the Mosel is first recorded in a document of 866, under the name Cuchuma, and it received the rights of a town in 1332.
