About Burg Eltz
Burg Eltz, a medieval castle of towers and half-timbered upper floors on a rock in a forest valley above the Mosel, owned by the same family since the twelfth century.
The Eltz family first appears in a charter of 1157, and the castle is still in their hands, now in the 34th generation. For centuries three branches of the family lived here side by side, each in its own house. Unlike most castles of the region, it was never razed in the wars, and much of its old furniture survives.
The castle is open daily from late March to early November only. The rooms are seen on a guided tour of about 40 minutes, mostly in German; the treasury and armoury can be visited freely. From the car park it is a walk of about 15 minutes, or a shuttle bus.
Did you know? Burg Eltz has belonged to the same family since the twelfth century; the present owners are the thirty-fourth generation of the lords of Eltz.
