About Beilstein
Beilstein, a tiny village on the Mosel with steep lanes, half-timbered houses, a baroque Carmelite church and the ruin of Burg Metternich above, often called the Sleeping Beauty of the Mosel.
Beilstein received town rights in 1309, but today it has only about 130 inhabitants. Its castle, later called Burg Metternich after its owners, was destroyed by French troops in 1689 and never rebuilt. The Carmelite church keeps a Black Madonna, probably of Spanish origin, and a Jewish cemetery lies above the castle.
The village is free to walk at any time. The castle ruin is privately owned, has an entry fee and opens from April to the end of October. A small passenger ferry crosses to Ellenz in season, and many taverns close in winter.
Did you know? Beilstein received the rights of a town in 1309, but today the little Mosel village has only about a hundred and thirty inhabitants.
