About St. Nikolaus Hospital

The St. Nikolaus Hospital in Kues, founded in 1458 by the cardinal and scholar Nicholas of Cusa as a home for 33 old men, with a Gothic chapel and his famous library.

Nicholas of Cusa, born in Kues in 1401, became a cardinal, a philosopher and a scientist. He founded the hospital for 33 men, one for each year of the life of Christ, and left it his library of more than 300 medieval manuscripts. His heart lies in the chapel. The foundation is still a home for elderly people today.

The chapel is free and open most days. The library can be seen only on a guided tour, on set days from April to October. A wine shop in the old vaulted cellars offers tastings. Keep your voice low, because people live here.
