About Vieux-Port

The ancient harbour at the heart of Marseille, active for 2,600 years, with a daily fish market, Norman Foster's stunning reflective steel canopy, and the birthplace of bouillabaisse.

The Vieux-Port is where Marseille begins, and has begun, for 2,600 years. Founded by Greek sailors from Phocaea around 600 BC, this horseshoe-shaped harbour sheltered in a gap in the limestone coast was the original city, and everything that Marseille has become since then has grown outward from this ancient anchorage. Today the port is primarily a pleasure and fishing harbour rather than a commercial one, but it retains the raw energy and character that has always defined Marseille. Every morning, fishermen sell their catch from boats moored along the quai des Belges, one of the oldest continuously operating fish markets in the world. Norman Foster's spectacular 2013 installation of an enormous polished stainless steel canopy creates a cathedral of reflections over the fishmarket. The Vieux-Port is also the departure point for boats to the Calanques, the Frioul islands, and the Château d'If.

Did you know? The Vieux-Port of Marseille has been continuously used as a harbour for approximately 2,600 years, it was founded by Greek sailors from Phocaea around 600 BC and is the oldest port in France.
