About La Vieille Charité
A magnificent 17th-century baroque almshouse designed by Pierre Puget, centred on a domed chapel, now a cultural centre hosting archaeological and African art museums.
La Vieille Charité is one of the finest baroque buildings in Provence and the architectural jewel of the Le Panier neighbourhood. Built between 1671 and 1749 as an almshouse to shelter Marseille's poor and homeless, it was designed by Pierre Puget, Marseille's most celebrated native architect, who created a masterpiece of formal baroque composition: three floors of arcaded galleries surrounding a central courtyard, presided over by a magnificent oval chapel with an egg-shaped dome. The complex fell into disuse after the Revolution and was used as military barracks, then as housing for displaced populations after WWII, before being magnificently restored in the 1980s. Today it hosts the Musée d'Archéologie Méditerranéenne and the Musée des Arts Africains, Océaniens, Amérindiens (MAAOA), as well as frequent temporary exhibitions and cultural events.
Did you know? La Vieille Charité was designed by Pierre Puget, Marseille's greatest baroque architect, who is less famous than he deserves because he spent his career in Marseille and Genoa rather than Paris.
