About Plage du Prado
The largest urban beach in France at 6 kilometres, created from land reclaimed from the sea in the 1970s, complete with a replica of Michelangelo's David and sports facilities.
The Plage du Prado is one of the most remarkable achievements of 20th-century urban planning in France, six kilometres of public beach created entirely from land reclaimed from the Mediterranean in the 1970s, using spoil excavated during the construction of the Marseille Metro. Before the reclamation, this section of coastline was rocky and largely inaccessible; today it is the city's main beach complex, offering free access to six kilometres of sandy and pebbly beaches backed by parks, sports facilities, volleyball courts, and a broad seaside promenade. The symbolic centrepiece is a large bronze replica of Michelangelo's David, erected on the roundabout at the northern end of the Prado, a somewhat surprising reference for a Provençal city, but beloved by Marseillais. The beach complex is linked by bus to the Vieux-Port and is free to all.
Did you know? The Plage du Prado was created entirely from land reclaimed from the Mediterranean in the 1970s using excavated material from the Marseille Metro construction, there was no beach here before 1975.
