About Musée Cantini
A superb collection of 20th-century art including Surrealism and Abstraction, housed in an elegant 17th-century Baroque townhouse in central Marseille.
The Musée Cantini is one of Marseille's finest museums and one of the most charming art museum settings in France, a superb collection of 20th-century art displayed in the perfectly restored rooms of a 17th-century Baroque townhouse bequeathed to the city in 1916. The collection focuses on art from the 1900s to the 1960s, with particular strength in Surrealism (Ernst, Dalí, Masson), Fauvism (Dufy), and Abstract Art. There are also significant works by Picasso and a particularly strong collection of works associated with Marseille and Provence. The building itself is a delight, Baroque interiors with original panelling, marble fireplaces, and painted ceilings that make the art doubly pleasurable to experience.
Did you know? Musée Cantini was bequeathed to Marseille in 1916 by sculptor Jules Cantini along with his art collection, the museum is still housed in the original 17th-century Baroque townhouse he donated.
