About Palais du Pharo
Napoleon III's palace on a dramatic cape overlooking the Vieux-Port entrance, now a conference centre with magnificent public gardens and sea views.
The Palais du Pharo occupies one of the most dramatic positions in Marseille, a limestone cape jutting into the sea at the entrance to the Vieux-Port, with commanding views over the harbour, the islands, and the open Mediterranean. The palace was commissioned by Napoleon III in 1858 as a residence for himself and Empress Eugénie during their visits to Marseille, but the Emperor died before it was completed, and Eugénie donated it to the city in 1904. Today it functions as a conference and exhibition centre, the interior is not generally open to the public, but the surrounding gardens, terraces, and esplanade are freely accessible and offer some of the most spectacular views in the city, looking directly down the throat of the Vieux-Port with the great fortresses of Saint-Jean and Saint-Nicolas flanking the entrance.
Did you know? Napoleon III commissioned the Palais du Pharo but died in exile in England before it was completed, he never used it. His wife Empress Eugénie donated it to the City of Marseille in 1904.
