About Le Panier District
Marseille's oldest neighbourhood, settled by Greek colonists in 600 BC, filled with colourful streets, street art, artisan studios, and the baroque Vieille Charité.
Le Panier is the oldest continuously inhabited neighbourhood in France, indeed, it was the original Greek settlement of Massalia, founded around 600 BC on the steep hill north of the Vieux-Port. The neighbourhood's name comes from a 17th-century gambling house called "le panier" (the basket). Today it is a maze of steep alleyways, colourful houses, unexpected staircases, and small squares, populated by artists, artisans, young creatives, and the remnants of the traditional working-class communities that have always lived here. Street art covers many of the walls, Marseille has one of the finest street art traditions in France. The centrepiece is the magnificent baroque complex of the Vieille Charité, but the neighbourhood's real character lies in its streets, its people, and its stubborn, eccentric, wonderfully Marseillais refusal to be gentrified into blandness.
Did you know? Le Panier is the oldest continuously inhabited urban neighbourhood in France, founded by Greek colonists from Phocaea around 600 BC, some of its lanes still follow the grid of the ancient Greek city.
