About Calanques National Park

Spectacular turquoise fjord-like limestone creeks forming one of Europe's most dramatic coastal landscapes, accessible by boat or hiking from Marseille.

The Calanques are one of France's most extraordinary natural landscapes, a series of steep-sided limestone inlets along the coastline south of Marseille, carved by ancient rivers and shaped by the sea over millions of years. The contrast between the brilliant white limestone cliffs, often rising more than 400 metres above the sea, and the impossibly vivid turquoise of the Mediterranean below creates views of surpassing beauty. The Parc National des Calanques, established in 2012, encompasses 520 square kilometres of sea and land between Marseille and Cassis. The three most celebrated calanques, Morgiou, Sormiou, and En-Vau, can be reached by boat from the Vieux-Port, by hiking trails from Marseille or Cassis, or by kayak along the coast. Access is restricted during summer fire risk periods.

Did you know? The Grotte Cosquer in the Calanques contains Palaeolithic cave paintings made 27,000-19,000 years ago, its entrance is 37 metres underwater due to Mediterranean sea level rise since the last Ice Age.
