About Notre-Dame de la Garde
The golden Madonna atop a 154m limestone peak, "la Bonne Mère" is the spiritual heart of Marseille, offering extraordinary panoramic views over the city and sea.
Notre-Dame de la Garde is the most beloved monument in Marseille, a Romano-Byzantine basilica crowned by a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary that has watched over the city from its 154-metre limestone peak since 1864. Known to all Marseillais as "la Bonne Mère", the Good Mother, she is the city's patron and protector, particularly venerated by sailors and fishermen who have filled the basilica's interior with extraordinary ex-voto offerings: model ships, paintings, photographs, and plaques expressing gratitude for rescue from shipwreck, illness, and danger. The basilica was built on the site of an earlier chapel and a medieval watchtower, and from its esplanade the view encompasses the entire Marseille conurbation, the islands of the Frioul archipelago, and on clear days, the distant Calanques coast.
Did you know? The golden Virgin Mary statue atop Notre-Dame de la Garde is 11 metres tall, weighs nearly 10 tonnes in gilded copper, and is visible from ships 50 kilometres out to sea on a clear day.
