La Rosaleda del Retiro is one of the most beautiful formal gardens in Spain, a large rose garden within the southwest portion of the Retiro Park, designed in the French formal style with geometric beds arranged around a central fountain. The garden contains over 4,000 specimens representing more than 100 different varieties of rose, ranging from ancient heritage varieties to modern cultivars. The Rosaleda hosts an annual international rose competition that attracts varieties from across Europe. The garden is beautiful at most times of year, but from mid-May through June it reaches its glorious peak, when hundreds of varieties are simultaneously in full bloom and the air is so heavily perfumed with rose fragrance that you can smell it from 50 metres away. The garden is free to enter.
