About Aranjuez Royal Palace & Gardens

Aranjuez, 47 kilometres south of Madrid in the fertile valley where the Tagus and Jarama rivers meet, is one of the most beautiful royal ensembles in Spain, a UNESCO Cultural Landscape of palace, gardens, and surrounding landscape that represents the apogee of Bourbon garden design in Spain. The Royal Palace, begun by Philip II in the 16th century and extensively expanded and remodelled under the Bourbon monarchs of the 18th century, sits at the centre of an extraordinary complex of formal gardens: the Parterre Garden with its geometric patterns of clipped hedges and fountains; the vast Island Garden (Jardín de la Isla) on an island in the Tagus, with baroque fountains and long shaded promenades; and the Prince's Garden (Jardín del Príncipe), a romantic English-style landscape park. The palace interior includes extraordinary state rooms and the remarkable Arab Room, a jewel of 19th-century Moorish Revival style. Aranjuez is also famous as the inspiration for Joaquín Rodrigo's 1939 Concierto de Aranjuez, the most performed Spanish classical composition in the world. The town is additionally famous for its white asparagus and strawberries.
