About Casa de América (Palacio de Linares)

A lavishly decorated 19th-century palace at the Cibeles intersection, allegedly haunted by the ghost of the first Marchioness of Linares, now housing Casa de América, a cultural centre for Latin American art and events.

The Palacio de Linares is one of the most sumptuous private residences of 19th-century Madrid, built between 1872 and 1900 for José de Murga, the first Marquess of Linares, a man who made an enormous fortune in Cuba. The palace is one of the four great buildings that frame the Cibeles fountain and is notable for its elaborate eclectic decoration, a mix of neo-Classical, neo-Baroque, and neo-Renaissance styles with gilded ballrooms, painted ceilings, and marble staircases. The palace is famous in Madrid for the persistent legend that it is haunted by the ghost of Raimunda, first Marchioness of Linares. Since 1992 the palace has housed Casa de América, a cultural foundation dedicated to promoting Latin American art, literature, and culture in Spain.
