About Segovia: Roman Aqueduct & Alcázar
A UNESCO World Heritage city 90km north of Madrid: an extraordinary Roman aqueduct still in near-perfect condition, a fairy-tale Alcázar castle that inspired Disney, and Castilian suckling pig roasted to perfection.
Segovia, 90 kilometres north of Madrid and reached in 30 minutes by high-speed train, is one of the greatest day trips available from the Spanish capital and one of the finest medieval cities in Europe. The city sits on a dramatic rocky ridge above the confluence of the Eresma and Clamores rivers, and its UNESCO-designated old city contains three of the most remarkable monuments in Spain. First: the Roman aqueduct, built in the 1st or 2nd century AD and still intact, its 166 granite arches still as perfect as the day they were completed, no mortar holds the stones together, only the precision of Roman engineering. Second: the Alcázar, a fairy-tale castle of pointed towers that has occupied its dramatic rock outcrop for over 1,000 years and directly inspired Walt Disney when designing Sleeping Beauty's castle for Disneyland. Third: the Gothic cathedral, completed in 1577 and the last major Gothic cathedral to be built in Spain. Segovia is also the undisputed capital of cochinillo asado, Castilian roast suckling pig, a dish of extraordinary quality here, particularly at the legendary Restaurant Mesón de Cándido beneath the aqueduct.
Did you know? Segovia's Roman aqueduct was built without any mortar, the 20,000+ granite blocks are held together purely by their own weight and the precision of their fitting, a testament to Roman engineering mastery.
