About CaixaForum Madrid
A striking cultural centre on the Paseo del Prado, housed in a former power station transformed by Herzog & de Meuron, famous for its gravity-defying 'floating' brick facade and a spectacular vertical garden.
CaixaForum Madrid is one of the most celebrated works of contemporary architecture in the Spanish capital, a cultural centre created in 2008 by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron through the transformation of an early 20th-century power station. The building appears to float above the street, its mass of corroded Corten steel raised on two triangular glass columns. The adjacent wall is covered with a spectacular 'vertical garden', a living installation of 15,000 plants of 250 different species, designed by botanist Patrick Blanc, that cascades 24 metres down the facade. CaixaForum hosts an ambitious programme of temporary exhibitions covering art, photography, science, and social themes.
