About La Latina Neighbourhood

Madrid's most atmospheric medieval neighbourhood with a labyrinth of tapas bars, ancient streets, and the best Sunday scene in the city after El Rastro market.

La Latina is the most characterful and historically resonant neighbourhood in central Madrid, a dense labyrinth of narrow medieval streets on a hillside southwest of Plaza Mayor that has preserved more of old Madrid's street plan than almost any other part of the city. The neighbourhood takes its name from Beatriz Galindo, a Renaissance humanist scholar and Latin teacher to Queen Isabella I, nicknamed "La Latina", she founded a hospital here in the late 15th century. Today La Latina is famous above all as Madrid's premier tapas neighbourhood, particularly during the Sunday ritual that combines El Rastro market in the morning with hours of tapas-eating and vermouth-drinking in the afternoon. The streets around Calle de la Cava Baja, Plaza del Humilladero, and Calle del Almendro are so densely packed with excellent tapas bars that choosing where to stop is the neighbourhood's main challenge. The Basílica de San Francisco el Grande, one of Madrid's grandest churches, is here; so is the Mercado de la Cebada, a neighbourhood market. The neighbourhood also has a significant immigrant community around Lavapiés, making it one of Madrid's most culturally diverse areas.

Did you know? La Latina neighbourhood is named after Beatriz Galindo, a female Renaissance scholar who taught Latin to Queen Isabella I and founded a hospital here in the 1490s, "La Latina" was her nickname.
