About Chueca
Madrid's vibrant LGBTQ+ neighbourhood, transformed from neglected slum to one of Europe's most fashionable and welcoming districts, home to the massive annual Pride festival.
Chueca is one of the most remarkable neighbourhood transformation stories in any European city, a district that was synonymous with crime, poverty, and drug dealing in the 1980s and has become, by the 2000s, one of Madrid's most fashionable and sought-after addresses. The transformation was led by Madrid's LGBTQ+ community, who began moving into the affordable (because neglected and stigmatised) housing stock of Chueca in the late 1980s and early 1990s, opening bars, restaurants, and businesses that gradually made the neighbourhood desirable. Today Chueca is Madrid's acknowledged gay neighbourhood, with a density of LGBTQ+ bars, clubs, boutiques, and community organizations that rivals any in Europe, but it has become so fashionable that it now attracts everyone regardless of orientation. The central square, Plaza de Chueca, is one of the most animated outdoor social spaces in Madrid. The annual Madrid Pride festival (MADO), held in late June or early July, is one of the largest in the world, transforming the entire neighbourhood and surrounding streets into a multi-day celebration attended by millions. The Mercado de San Antón in the heart of the neighbourhood is one of Madrid's best gourmet food markets.
Did you know? Madrid Pride (MADO) is one of the world's largest Pride events, the 2017 EuroPride attracted an estimated 3.5 million attendees to the parade alone, making it one of the biggest single-day events in European history.
