About Jardines de Sabatini
Elegant formal French gardens behind the Royal Palace, designed in the 1930s on the site of the old royal stables, offering fine views of the palace's impressive western façade.
The Jardines de Sabatini are a set of elegant formal gardens located immediately north of the Royal Palace of Madrid, occupying the site where the old Royal Stables once stood. Designed in the 1930s in a neo-French formal garden style, with symmetrical hedgerow patterns, stone fountains, and a long central reflecting pool, the gardens take their name from Francisco Sabatini, the 18th-century Italian architect who designed the Puerta de Alcalá and worked extensively for Charles III in Madrid. The gardens offer one of the finest views of the Royal Palace available in Madrid, looking up at the grand western façade of the palace from a slightly lower position, the palace appears almost fortress-like from this angle, its massive bulk rising above the gardens. The reflecting pool mirrors the sky and the palace in perfect symmetry. The gardens are particularly beautiful in spring when the magnolias bloom and in autumn when the trees colour. Peacocks roam the gardens freely. Romantic concerts are sometimes held in the gardens on summer evenings.
Did you know? The Jardines de Sabatini were created in the 1930s on the site of the Royal Palace's old stables, which were demolished to improve the northern approach to the palace.
