About Barrio de las Letras

Madrid's historic literary quarter where Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Quevedo once lived, now a charming neighbourhood with cobblestone streets bearing literary quotations and excellent restaurants.

The Barrio de las Letras, the Literary Quarter, is the neighbourhood between the Paseo del Prado and the Huertas district that was home to the greatest concentration of Golden Age Spanish writers in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, lived and died here. Lope de Vega, the most prolific playwright in history with over 1,500 plays to his name, built his house here, it survives as a museum. Francisco de Quevedo, perhaps the greatest poet of the Spanish Golden Age, also lived in this neighbourhood, as did Tirso de Molina, who created the character of Don Juan. The streets are now embedded with bronze letters quoting these authors' works in the pavement, a charming literary pilgrimage. Today the barrio is one of Madrid's most desirable neighbourhoods: full of excellent restaurants, bars, independent bookshops, and a cosmopolitan, bohemian atmosphere. The Calle de las Huertas and Calle del León are particularly lively. The nearby Plaza Santa Ana is one of Madrid's most beautiful and animated squares.

Did you know? Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare died within days of each other in April 1616, though they died on different calendar dates because Spain used the Gregorian calendar while England still used the Julian calendar.
