About Basílica de San Francisco el Grande

Home to the largest church dome in Spain, a neoclassical royal basilica housing an early Goya painting, and a collection of 17th-century choir stalls from the Monastery of El Paular.

The Basílica de San Francisco el Grande, located in La Latina at the southern edge of Madrid's historic centre, is one of the most imposing religious buildings in Spain, a circular neoclassical basilica completed in 1784 whose dome, at 33 metres in diameter and 58 metres high, is the largest in Spain and one of the largest in Europe. The church is a royal basilica, built under the direction of King Charles III as part of his programme to give Madrid monuments worthy of a great capital city. The architect Francisco Cabezas won the competition to design it, and the building he created is remarkable for its spatial drama: the vast circular interior, lit from the enormous dome above, creates a space of extraordinary height and volume. The church contains works of art by some of the greatest Spanish painters of the 18th century, most notably an early Goya painting depicting Saint Bernardino of Siena, painted in 1783, which is one of the earliest documented works by Goya and can be seen in the first chapel on the left. The church also houses the magnificent 17th-century choir stalls brought from the Monastery of El Paular in the Sierra de Guadarrama.

Did you know? The dome of San Francisco el Grande measures 33 metres in diameter and 58 metres high, the largest dome in Spain and, by some counts, the fourth largest in Europe after the Pantheon, St Peter's Basilica, and Florence Cathedral.
