About St Thomas Church (Thomaskirche)
St Thomas Church in Leipzig, the late-Gothic church where Johann Sebastian Bach was cantor from 1723 to 1750, home of the St Thomas Boys' Choir, where Bach is believed to be buried.
The present church was consecrated in 1496. Bach led the music here and in the other main churches of the city for 27 years, and since 1950 his grave has lain in the choir. The Thomanerchor, probably founded in 1212, still sings here, and bronze statues of Bach and of Felix Mendelssohn stand nearby.
The church is usually open daily, but rehearsals and events can change the hours. The boys' choir sings motets on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons, and a programme is needed to enter.
Did you know? Johann Sebastian Bach was cantor of St Thomas Church in Leipzig from 1723 until his death in 1750, in charge of the music of the main city churches.
