About Old Town Hall and Market Square
The Old Town Hall of Leipzig, a long Renaissance building of 1556 with an arcade and a clock tower on the market square, now the city history museum, where Bach signed his contract.
The town hall was rebuilt in 1556 under the mayor and merchant Hieronymus Lotter, in only a few months between two trade fairs. The council moved out in 1905, and the building became a museum. Burned out in 1943, it was rebuilt by 1950. The market square in front, about 140 by 70 metres, has been the centre of the city since the Middle Ages.
The city history museum is closed on Mondays, and entry is free. The square is a pedestrian zone, with markets, and in the weeks before Christmas a Christmas market with a tradition going back to 1458.
Did you know? The Old Town Hall of Leipzig was rebuilt in 1556 in only a few months, between March and November, in the gap between two trade fairs.
