About Mädler Passage and Auerbachs Keller

The Mädler Passage in Leipzig, a glass-roofed shopping arcade of 1914 modelled on the Galleria in Milan, and below it Auerbachs Keller, the wine cellar of a famous scene in Goethe's Faust.

The arcade was built from 1912 to 1914 for the leather-goods maker Anton Mädler, on the site of the old Auerbachs Hof. Wine has been served in the cellar below since at least 1438. Goethe, who studied in Leipzig, knew the cellar, and he set a scene of Faust here, in which Mephisto makes wine flow from a table for a group of students.

The arcade is open to the public, with shops and cafés. Auerbachs Keller is a restaurant, and its great cellar opens only in the evening on some days, so check before you go. Bronze figures of Faust and Mephisto stand at its entrance.
