About Museum of Fine Arts
The Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig, a glass cube of 2004 in the old town, with about 3,500 paintings from the late Middle Ages to the Leipzig School, and Max Klinger's Beethoven.
The museum was founded by citizens in 1848, and its first building on Augustusplatz burned out in 1943. The new building, chosen from 532 designs, opened on 4 December 2004, sixty-one years to the day after that loss. Its collection runs from Cranach and Frans Hals to Caspar David Friedrich and the painters of the Leipzig School.
The museum is closed on Mondays and opens later on Wednesdays. Special exhibitions need a ticket, and ticket rules can change, so check before you go. Large bags must go into lockers.
