About Spinnerei
The Spinnerei in Leipzig, a cotton mill of 1884 that was billed as the largest in continental Europe, now a quarter of artists' studios, galleries, workshops and theatres in old brick halls.
At its peak the mill had about 240,000 spindles and up to 4,000 workers. Yarn production ended in 1993, and artists moved into the empty halls; painters of the New Leipzig School, such as Neo Rauch, are linked with the site. Today around ten galleries, about a hundred studios, a centre for contemporary art, a cinema and restaurants share the ten-hectare site.
The courtyards and galleries are free to visit, usually from Tuesday to Saturday; individual galleries set their own hours, and studios are private. Twice a year the galleries hold open weekends.
Did you know? The Leipzig Cotton Mill, founded in 1884, was billed as the largest cotton mill in continental Europe, with up to four thousand workers.
