About St Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche)

St Nicholas Church in Leipzig, with its white palm-tree columns, where weekly prayers for peace began in 1982 and led in autumn 1989 to the Monday demonstrations of the Peaceful Revolution.

The church was begun around 1165 and rebuilt over the centuries; in the 1780s and 1790s its interior was given Neoclassical columns crowned with palm leaves. Bach's St John Passion was first performed here in 1724. From 1982 small groups met here every Monday to pray for peace, and on 9 October 1989 tens of thousands marched from here around the ring road without violence.

The church is usually open daily, but not during services and concerts. The prayer for peace is still held every Monday in the late afternoon, and an exhibition in the south chapel tells its story.
