About Monument to the Battle of the Nations
The Monument to the Battle of the Nations in Leipzig, a stone giant 91 metres high, opened in 1913, a hundred years after the battle of 1813 that ended Napoleon's rule in Germany.
In October 1813 about half a million soldiers fought around Leipzig, and about a hundred thousand or more died. The monument, designed by Bruno Schmitz, was built mostly of concrete faced with granite and opened on 18 October 1913. Inside are a crypt with huge death masks, a hall with colossal statues, and steps up to a viewing platform.
The monument needs a ticket, which includes the Forum 1813 museum. It is open daily, with shorter hours in winter. The climb to the top is steep and narrow; a lift runs part of the way.
