About Torre del Parco
A rare surviving Angevin tower from the late 14th century in the heart of the old city, one of the few pre-baroque monuments that predates the architectural revolution that transformed Lecce.
The Torre del Parco is one of the very few surviving medieval monuments in the city of Lecce, a tall, slender square tower in the Angevin Gothic style, built around 1380 during the period of Angevin rule over the Kingdom of Naples that included Puglia. The tower served as a fortified residence and watchtower for the Angevin governors, and its survival amid the wholesale baroque transformation of the city from the 16th century onwards is remarkable. The tower stands in the Piazza Tancredi, just a short walk from the Basilica di Santa Croce, and provides a striking visual contrast: while everything around it glitters with baroque ornament in golden pietra leccese, the Torre del Parco is built in a darker, plainer stone in the austere Gothic style that preceded the baroque by three hundred years.
Did you know? The Torre del Parco is one of the very few pre-baroque buildings surviving in the historic centre of Lecce, the comprehensive reconstruction of the city in the 17th century was so thorough that almost no medieval fabric survived except this tower and a few scattered fragments.
