About Primitivo & Negroamaro Wines
Puglia's two great indigenous red grape varieties, the powerful Primitivo (the same grape as California's Zinfandel) and the deeply coloured Negroamaro, producing wines of extraordinary richness and character.
Puglia is one of Italy's most productive wine regions, and the Salento peninsula around Lecce is at the heart of its finest wine production. Two indigenous red grape varieties dominate: Primitivo and Negroamaro. Primitivo, the same grape variety as California's Zinfandel, brought to America by Croatian immigrants in the 19th century, produces wines of extraordinary concentration and power, often reaching 15-16% alcohol naturally in the hot Pugliese climate. The wines of Primitivo di Manduria DOC, produced around the town of Manduria, are the most prestigious expression of this variety. Negroamaro, meaning 'black bitter', produces wines of equally deep colour with complex flavours that balance the richness of the sun-baked grape with an underlying bitterness and earthiness. Both varieties are native to the Salento and have been cultivated here for at least two thousand years.
Did you know? Puglia's Primitivo grape is genetically identical to California's Zinfandel, DNA testing in the 1990s confirmed this, revealing that the grape was brought to America in the 19th century by Croatian immigrants who had cultivated it from vines originating in Puglia.
