About Santa Maria di Leuca
The southernmost tip of the Italian peninsula, the very end of the boot, where the Adriatic meets the Ionian and a great basilica marks the traditional boundary of Christendom.
Santa Maria di Leuca stands at the absolute southernmost tip of the Salento peninsula, the southern point of the 'heel' of the Italian boot, where the waters of the Adriatic Sea on the east meet the waters of the Ionian Sea on the west. The town is dominated by the magnificent Basilica di Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, Our Lady at the End of the Earth, which sits on the cliff top above the town and is visible from far out to sea. According to tradition, this site was the first place in Italy where Christianity was preached: the apostle Peter is said to have stopped here on his journey to Rome, and later the apostle Paul during his voyage described in the Acts of the Apostles. The dramatic craggy coastline near the town has numerous sea caves and a spectacular waterfall that drops directly from a Roman aqueduct into the sea.
Did you know? At Santa Maria di Leuca, you can see both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas simultaneously, the meeting of the two seas creates a visible colour difference on the water surface, with the slightly warmer, saltier Ionian water distinguishable from the Adriatic.
