About Porta Napoli
The magnificent triumphal arch at the northern entrance to Lecce's historic centre, built in 1548 to honour Emperor Charles V in an elegant Renaissance classical style that predates the Leccese baroque.
Porta Napoli is the most impressive of the three surviving city gates of Lecce and the principal entrance to the historic centre from the north. The arch was built in 1548 to honour the visit of Emperor Charles V, the Habsburg monarch who was simultaneously King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor, and whose empire, which included Puglia, was the largest in the world at the time. The gate takes the form of a classical Roman triumphal arch: a single arched opening framed by paired pilasters, with an entablature above bearing decorative reliefs, and originally surmounted by an equestrian statue of the Emperor (since lost). The decoration is in the characteristic golden pietra leccese, and the carving includes the imperial arms, classical ornament, and the dedicatory inscription that identifies the monument's purpose. The arch stands at the top of a broad street leading into the heart of the old town.
Did you know? Porta Napoli was built in 1548 to honour the visit of Emperor Charles V, the man who was simultaneously King of Spain, Holy Roman Emperor, ruler of the Netherlands, and master of a colonial empire larger than any previously seen in history.
