About Museo Provinciale Sigismondo Castromediano
Lecce's main archaeological museum, with an exceptional collection of Greek, Messapian, and Roman artefacts from the Salento, including some of the finest Greek pottery outside Athens.
The Museo Provinciale Sigismondo Castromediano is the principal museum of Lecce and one of the most important archaeological collections in southern Italy. Named after the Count Sigismondo Castromediano, a nineteenth-century nobleman who was imprisoned by the Bourbon government for his patriotic activities and who used his time in prison to collect and document archaeological finds from the region, the museum has grown over two centuries into a comprehensive archive of Salentine history. The collection is strongest in its Greek and Messapian material: the Messapii were an indigenous Italic people who inhabited the Salento before Greek colonisation, and their distinctive ceramic tradition is represented here by extraordinary examples. The Greek section includes red-figure vases of the highest quality, many excavated from the necropolises of ancient Rudiae and Cavallino.
Did you know? Count Castromediano, who founded the museum's core collection, was so famous in liberal Europe for his imprisonment by the Bourbon regime that Alexandre Dumas, author of The Count of Monte Cristo, visited him and wrote about his case in French newspapers.
