About Rattenberg

Rattenberg on the Inn, the smallest town in Austria, a medieval town of about a hundred old houses below a castle ruin, known for its glass cutters and engravers.

Rattenberg was a Bavarian town from 1393 and passed to Maximilian I in 1505. About nine in ten of its houses date from the Middle Ages. Glass was made across the river at Kramsach and finished in Rattenberg.

The old town is a car-free zone, open at all times. Glass workshops show their craft on weekdays in the warm season. Part of the town lies in the shadow of the mountain in winter.

Did you know? Rattenberg is the smallest town in Austria by area, about one tenth of a square kilometre, with fewer than 500 inhabitants in all.
