About Achensee

The Achensee, the largest lake of Tyrol, a long, clear mountain lake between the Karwendel and the Rofan, sailed by passenger ships since 1887 and reached from Jenbach by an old steam rack railway.

The lake lies at 929 metres and is up to 133 metres deep, with water clear enough to see about ten metres down. Steamers sailed it from 1887; today's ships run on diesel. The Achenseebahn steam railway climbs to it from Jenbach.

Ships run all year on part of the lake, with more stops in summer. The steam railway runs in the warm season. Check timetables before you go. The water is very cold even in summer.

Did you know? The Achensee is the largest lake of Tyrol; it is up to 133 metres deep, and on a calm day you can see about ten metres down into its water.
