About Nordkette

The Nordkette cable cars, which climb from Innsbruck's old town to the high Karwendel mountains, by the Hungerburg funicular with stations by Zaha Hadid and then by cable car to Seegrube and Hafelekar.

The first cable car to Seegrube and Hafelekar opened in 1928. The new Hungerburg funicular, with four stations designed by Zaha Hadid, opened in 2007. Hafelekar station stands at 2,269 metres.

The lifts run all year except for maintenance in April and November. The round trip to Hafelekar takes about 70 to 80 minutes; allow at least three hours. It is much colder at the top than in town.

Did you know? The architect Zaha Hadid designed the four stations of the Hungerburg funicular, which opened in 2007; their roofs are shaped like flowing ice.
