About Hofkirche
The Hofkirche of Innsbruck, the court church built as a memorial to Emperor Maximilian I, around whose empty tomb stand 28 larger-than-life bronze figures known as the Black Men.
Ferdinand I built the church in the mid-16th century to honour his grandfather. Maximilian is buried in Wiener Neustadt, so the tomb here is empty. The 28 bronze figures were made between 1502 and 1555.
Entry is through the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, with a ticket. Sunday visits start later in the day. Services can limit visits. Andreas Hofer is buried in the church.
Did you know? The tomb of Maximilian I in the Hofkirche is empty: the emperor asked to be buried in Wiener Neustadt, where he lies today.
