About Golden Roof
The Golden Roof, the Goldenes Dachl, the late Gothic oriel of Maximilian I in Innsbruck's old town, covered with 2,657 gilded copper tiles, from which the ruler watched festivals in the square below.
Maximilian I had the oriel added to the Neuhof, the residence of the rulers of Tyrol, between 1497 and 1500. Its reliefs show him with his two wives; the originals are in the Ferdinandeum museum.
You can see the Golden Roof from the street at any time. The small museum inside is closed on Mondays from October to April. The square is very busy in summer and during the Christmas market.
Did you know? The Golden Roof of Innsbruck is covered with 2,657 copper tiles gilded with fire, not with solid gold, which shine in the sun at every hour.
