About Ambras Castle

Ambras Castle above Innsbruck, the Renaissance residence of Archduke Ferdinand II and Philippine Welser, with the Spanish Hall and the only Renaissance chamber of art and wonders still in its original building.

Ferdinand II bought the castle in 1564 and rebuilt it for his wife, Philippine Welser, a commoner he had married in secret. He built rooms for his collections of art, armour and curiosities, which still stand where he placed them.

The castle is part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna. It is open daily but closed in November. Tickets are cheaper online. Allow about two hours, plus time for the park.
