About Old Town and Maria-Theresien-Strasse
The old town of Innsbruck, its arcaded medieval street of Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse, and the Baroque Maria-Theresien-Strasse with the Anna Column and the Triumphal Arch, below the Nordkette mountains.
Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse goes back to the founding of the town in the 12th century; its houses were rebuilt in stone from about 1500, with arcades. Maria-Theresien-Strasse was the Baroque new town, with the Anna Column of 1706 and the Triumphal Arch of 1765.
Both streets are public and car-free, open at all times. Shops mostly close on Sundays. In Advent the Christmas markets fill the streets.
Did you know? The houses of Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse were rebuilt in stone from about 1500, with their first floors pushed out over the street to make arcades.
