The Dresden Transportation Museum (Verkehrsmuseum Dresden) is one of the finest transport history museums in Germany, housed in the historic Johanneum building on the Neumarkt square. The Johanneum is itself a major historical building, a long, elegant Baroque structure originally built in the sixteenth century as the court stables and later used as an art gallery. The museum's collection spans the full history of mechanical transport: historic automobiles from the earliest horseless carriages to twentieth-century classics; railway history including historic locomotives and carriages; the history of cycling; river and sea navigation; and a gallery dedicated to aviation history. Particularly notable are the early automobiles, including examples from the pioneering era of German automotive engineering, and the extensive railway collection featuring both full-size and model locomotives. The museum appeals strongly to visitors of all ages and provides an excellent complement to the art and history museums of the Old Town.
