About Striezelmarkt (Dresden Christmas Market)
Germany's oldest Christmas market, held on Altmarkt square since 1434, famous for its giant Christmas pyramid, Stollen fruit bread, and the warm magic of the Saxon Advent season.
The Striezelmarkt, Dresden Christmas Market, is the oldest Christmas market in Germany, first recorded in 1434 on the Altmarkt (Old Market Square) in the heart of Dresden's city centre. For nearly six centuries, the market has been held annually on the same square, and despite the devastation of 1945, which destroyed the surrounding buildings entirely, the market never permanently stopped. Today it runs for approximately four weeks each Advent season, filling the Altmarkt with some 240 market stalls offering traditional Saxon crafts, wooden toys, Erzgebirge carved figures, glass ornaments, mulled wine (Glühwein), and seasonal foods. The market's centrepiece is the world's tallest revolving Christmas pyramid, over 14 metres high. Dresden Stollen, the rich, dense fruit bread traditionally associated with the Christmas season, is the market's signature food; it has protected geographical indication status and can only legally be produced in the Dresden region. The Stollen Festival (Stollenfest), held each year on the second Saturday of Advent, features a giant Stollen weighing several tonnes, ceremonially cut and distributed to visitors.
Did you know? The Striezelmarkt has been held annually on the Altmarkt since 1434, making it the oldest Christmas market in Germany, surviving wars, occupations, and 45 years of communist rule to celebrate its 590th edition in 2024.
