About Blue Wonder Bridge (Loschwitz Bridge)
Dresden's famous 1893 cantilever truss bridge connecting Blasewitz and Loschwitz, an engineering masterpiece nicknamed 'Blue Wonder' despite never having been painted blue.
The Loschwitz Bridge, universally known as the Blaues Wunder, the Blue Wonder, is Dresden's most loved and most extraordinary bridge, spanning the Elbe in the Loschwitz district about 5 kilometres upstream from the Old Town. Built between 1891 and 1893, it was a technical marvel of its era: a cantilevered truss bridge 280 metres long with a central main span of 146 metres, carrying both road traffic and a pedestrian walkway. At the time of its construction it was one of the longest rigid bridges in the world and an engineering sensation. The bridge was never actually painted blue, the grey-green colour of its steel lattice acquired the bluish tint through oxidation and the light of the Elbe valley, and the nickname stuck. During the final days of World War II, the bridge became historically significant when German troops retreated across it but local citizens blocked the demolition order, saving it from destruction. The bridge is flanked by the elegant villas of the upmarket Blasewitz and Loschwitz neighbourhoods and is served by Dresden's historic funicular railways.
Did you know? The Blue Wonder has never actually been blue, its grey-green steel lattice acquired a bluish luminosity from the reflection of Elbe light that earned it the name, and the colour is repainted every few decades in the same formula.
